Screw (or 'Edison') based lamps are measured across the base and generally come in the following sizes:
5mm E5 Lilliput Edison Screw (LES)
10mm E10 Miniature Edison Screw (MES)
12mm E12 Candelabra
14mm E14 Small Edison Screw (SES)
17mm E17 Intermediate
26mm E26 Medium Skirted
27mm E27 Edison Screw (ES)
40mm E40 Goliath Edison Screw
For example…
If the bulb you are replacing is say: 12 volt, 30 watt has an Edison screw base like the photo above, which measures 14mm across, then it is known as:
12V 30W E14
